Porsche 911 S/T Sonderwunsch Recreates a Forgotten Le Mans Hero in Light Yellow

Quick Highlights:

  • Tribute to the 1972 Porsche 911 2.5 S/T, a GT-class winner at Le Mans.
  • Built through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program, made to order.
  • Painted Light Yellow with original-style decals.
  • Based on the 992 911 S/T, price well above the $290,000 base.

In 1972, Porsche constructed a 911 2.5 S/T that looked rather inconspicuous next to the bruisers at Le Mans. Yet by the end of the race, the yellow coupe with number 41 on its doors had snatched a GT class win. It wasn’t the headline car of the event, but it carved out a quiet place in Porsche racing history.

Then it disappeared. After a few more outings in the mid-’70s, the S/T dropped off the radar and, almost unbelievably, ended up languishing in a San Francisco barn. Corrosion crept in, panels warped, and what was once a Le Mans hero turned into a forgotten relic of rust.

Fast forward to 2013: a Swiss collector stumbled across the wreck and knew it deserved another chance. He sent it back to Porsche Classic, where experts spent years rebuilding the car piece by piece until it looked just as it had in 1972. And because one resurrection wasn’t enough, that same owner turned to Porsche’s Sonderwunsch division to create something even rarer — a modern 911 S/T built as a factory-approved tribute to his revived racer.

Reimagining History in Light Yellow

The tribute starts with the 992-generation 911 S/T — already the most purist, lightweight member of the current lineup. Porsche didn’t touch the mechanicals: under the hood sits a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six pushing out 525 hp (386 kW / 532 PS) and 450 Nm of torque. It spins all the way to 9,000 rpm, sends power through a six-speed manual, and the car tips the scales at just 1,380 kilograms.

Where this Sonderwunsch project really comes alive is in the details. The new S/T is finished in the same Light Yellow (paint code 117) as the 1972 Le Mans winner — a shade missing from Porsche’s palette for decades. It rides on forged magnesium wheels in Darksilver, hides black brake calipers behind them, and keeps the interior simple and dark to match the retro theme. Then come the nostalgic touches: number 41 roundels, period-style sponsor decals, and a hand-applied paint finish. The only thing absent from the original tribute is the pair of rally-style auxiliary lights once perched on the hood.

Factory-Level Homage, Collector-Level Price

The standard 911 S/T already carries a sticker around $290,000 before options. With the bespoke work of Sonderwunsch — hand-applied paint, custom livery, archival research, and unique build touches — this Light Yellow tribute almost certainly climbs well into the high six-figure territory. Porsche has not disclosed the final price, but for a collector commissioning a direct homage to his restored Le Mans hero, money was never the deciding factor.

Linking Past and Present

It is not all about appearances in this car. It confirms the racing history of Porsche is not an art gallery relic but is living and continues to define 911 to this day.

Now the rebuilt S/T of 1972 and its contemporary homage are under one roof. One has the scars of Le Mans, the other the accuracy of the latest work of Zuffenhausen. They are combined to represent a half-century of Porsche performance.

Custome 911 The Sonderwunsch S/T is not merely another customised 911. It is a direct line back to the days of endurance racing glory- and a reminder that not all cars that are cool are loud.
