2026 Volvo EX90 Goes Big: 800-Volt System, Electrochromic Roof, and Smarter Driver Assistance

Quick Highlights:

  • 800-V Architecture: The EX90 will double its operating voltage from 400 V to 800 V to achieve faster charging, increased efficiency, and weight savings due to fewer components.
  • Quick DC Charging: The updated EX90 takes 10 minutes on a 350-kW DC fast charger to gain up to 155 miles of range. Charging times may vary based on temperature, battery condition, and charger type.
  • Sophisticated AI and Safety: A dual-CPU NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin delivers 500 TOPS of driver-assistance capabilities and Emergency Stop Assist. The system is over-the-air upgradable.
  • Electrochromic Panoramic Roof: Adjustable transparency in the glass adds luxury and comfort to the SUV’s interior. First introduced on the Volvo ES90.

The 2026 Volvo EX90 is here just a year after the 2025 model, and it’s got some big changes. The main one is the new 800-volt system. Before it was 400 volts. This means faster charging, more power, and a lighter system.

The 107-kWh battery (standard across trims) can use a 350-kW fast charger. You can get about 155 miles of range in 10 minutes. That’s 43 miles more than before. Volvo hasn’t said exactly how long 10–80% will take, but it is expected to be faster than the previous 30-minute 400V charging time.

The lighter motors and battery help the car go faster too. The Twin Motor EX90 makes 402–510 hp (300–380 kW / 407–520 PS) and 568–671 lb-ft (770–910 Nm) of torque. The Twin Motor Performance variant goes 0–60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

Smarter Tech and Safety

Volvo

The 2026 EX90 brings in a dual core computer with NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin with 500 TOPS (trillion operations per second). That enables Volvo to spread its AI-assisted driver-help systems, such as:

  • Emergency Stop Assist (ESA): The vehicle will be safely stopped in case of driver unresponsiveness, and the emergency services will be automatically contacted.
  • Connected Safety Alerts: Real-time warnings for slippery roads, hazards, or accidents ahead.
  • Enhanced Parking Assistance: Better Park Pilot parallel parking system and automatic emergency steering during dark environments.

The old owners of 2025 EX90 have the chance to upgrade their car with the new core computer, delivered by a scheduled visit to the Volvo workshop, so that their SUV would have the advantage of the latest software and safety features.

The EX90 retains the CCS charging connector, with an adapter included for compatibility.
