Ford’s New Bronco Hybrid Goes 800 Miles Without Looking Back — But You Can’t Buy It

Key Points:

  • Ford just revealed an all-new electric and plug-in hybrid Bronco, but it’s only for China.
  • The hybrid version offers an astounding total range of 800 miles.
  • It’s larger, heavier, and more high-tech than the Ford Bronco Sport Americans know.
  • U.S. fans are still stuck with gas-only Broncos while China gets the electrified upgrade.

Ford just pulled a move that is both exciting and a little bit frustrating. They’ve launched a brand new version of the Bronco in China called Bronco New Energy which features an all electric powertrain and PHEV setup that the U.S. still does not have.

Yes, you read that right. China is getting an 800-mile hybrid Bronco before the U.S. even gets a hint.

The plug-in hybrid variant comes with a 44kWh battery coupled with a 1.5L turbo engine (functioning in a range-extender mode). This means the engine doesn’t directly drive the wheels, but rather powers the battery when necessary. You can achieve 136 miles solely on electric power (which is already solid for daily commutes), and when combined with a full tank of gas, the total range skyrockets to 800 miles.

Furthermore, there is an entirely electric version of the Bronco that features a powerful battery with a capacity of over 105 kWh. It also claims to have a range of 403 to 404 miles, although this information was retrieved on the more optimistic WLTP standard. Even with that in mind, it is still extremely remarkable, especially for the SU.

And speaking of size, this isn’t just a regular Bronco Sport with a battery pack. It’s way bigger. The Chinese Bronco stretches over 197 inches in length, rides on a 116-inch wheelbase, and tips the scales at over 5,800 pounds in EV form. That’s heavier than a Bronco Raptor. Visually, it blends the boxy charm of the Bronco Sport with some rugged cues from the full-size Bronco, like the spare tire mounted on the tailgate and chunky off-road tires. This kind of size and utility might remind U.S. shoppers of SUVs with captain seats and third row.

Surprisingly, this SUV is equipped with a Lidar sensor on the roof as part of the ADAS system. That’s a feature you won’t even find on the U.S. Broncos right now.

Power numbers aren’t fully official yet, but early reports say the EV gets 271 horsepower, while the hybrid version pushes 241 hp. Both are said to be front-wheel drive, which might be a bummer for die-hard off-road fans in the U.S., where Broncos are all about AWD and 4×4 adventure. So why is this wild new Bronco not coming to America?

Ford claims that this model is specially designed for Chinese consumers as a result of a partnership with Jiangling Motors. Although there’s been talk about a hybrid version of the Bronco for the U.S. market, there’s still no confirmation on whether or when we will get it. For now, if you’re looking for something close, here are Ford Bronco competitors you might want to consider.

Which is a shame. With Americans craving SUVs that can handle both long-distance drives and urban commutes, a plug-in Bronco with real off-road vibes and electric range could be a hit. Plus, EREV setups — that’s extended-range electric vehicles- are perfect for people who want electric power most days, but still need a gas backup for road trips or rougher terrain.

To sum up, China just got the most awesome Bronco Ford has ever built, and U.S. fans are left watching and wondering what it’ll take to get something like it here.
